Conditions Treated

We at Griswold Eye Care, with our eye doctor serving Jewett City, CT, Griswold, CT, Lisbon, CT, Plainfield, CT, Canterbury, CT, and surrounding areas, offer an array of eye care services to help people with various vision and eye health conditions. Let's discuss some examples of what we treat.

Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a refractive error. It occurs when the eye isn't shaped like how it normally is. Instead, it's shaped wrongly. The light then enters your eye and scatters rather than focusing directly on the retina. You then experience blurred vision far away and possibly up close.

Nearsightedness

Nearsightedness, medically known as myopia, is a condition where you can't see well far away, but objects close up appear clear. It occurs when light enters the eye and focuses before the retina rather than on it.

The typical eye care treatment for this problem is contacts or glasses prescribed by an eye doctor.

Farsightedness

Farsightedness, known as hyperopia, occurs when you can't see well up close but can see clearly far away. Our optometrist treats this issue with prescription eyewear, either contacts or glasses.

In some cases, a person may have both myopia and hyperopia, which is treatable with bifocals.

Presbyopia

Presbyopia occurs when you have trouble seeing up close when you look at words or objects near you, such as when you're reading. However, unlike standard farsightedness, this occurs as you age, particularly when you enter your senior years.

Glaucoma and Other Chronic Eye Conditions

Besides vision problems, our optometrist also diagnoses and helps treats eye health problems like glaucoma, cataracts, and diabetic retinopathy, among others. Glaucoma, for instance, can occur when pressure rises in your eye and causes damage to the optic nerve. This part of your eye is necessary for the eye and the brain to communicate, so damage to it will interfere with that process.

Cataracts are a condition when the lens of your eye becomes cloudy and interferes with your ability to see clearly.

Diabetic retinopathy, however, occurs in patients who have diabetes. The uncontrolled high blood sugar levels cause damage to the blood vessels in the back of the eye, specifically the retina. As a result, you'll have floaters, blurred vision, and dark spots in your field of vision.
